ZANDER

“You’re lucky it was me.” Caxi and the entire room stood still, staring in horror.

At me.

At the sound I released.

No one stepped forward, no one dared move an inch to help Honey. Not that some didn’t want too, I could see her friends and the teacher wanted to help. But they looked to me, saw my protective hold on her and stilled. My whole body shook, I was livid. I arrived seconds too late. Caxi’s wooden staff had just collided with the side of Honey’s head snapping her head to the side with a sickening crack when I shadowed into the room. The room slowed down as the staff glided through the air, sounds whistling from the speed of it. I caught her just before she hit the ground. I dived down and skidded on my knees catching her shoulders and cradled her head just in time. I could feel myself pale at the sight. Her head was split open so deeply I feared even the school’s healer couldn’t save her. The fear and anger overtook me. I had no control over myself in those split seconds after I caught her. I couldn’t stop the monster within.

Everyone heard me.

The demon I try to hide.

Honey’s head grew heavy seconds before her body started to convulse and seize.

I couldn’t understand it but it felt like I was the one to receive the blow. I could feel the headache spearing across my head, the ache in my neck, the throbbing..

“No..” I couldn’t waste any more time.

I shadowed us from the classroom to the infirmary seconds before Maxen arrived. Bane soon followed speaking softly how he heard her soul screaming even from the dark depths of the library. The healer ran to Honey’s side as I laid her down and told her what happened. Her glowing hands hovered over her head.

But a few seconds later, she began to scream. Honey’s eyes snapped opened, black as night and ringed with silver. She was awake but her eyes were un-looking like she wasn’t conscious, staring right up into the face of the healer. She screamed and screamed; other healers came rushing in to help but we all froze. Hell, even I felt the shiver of fear shoot down my spine. I stumbled back watching as the healers healthy, full hands began to wither. Knuckles protruded from her now bony hands, her skin paled to a sickly grey wash colour and her face began to hollow out. Somehow, Honey, even in her injured, unconscious state was sucking the life force from the healer.

“She’s saving herself?” Maxen whispered in disbelief. His hand hovered by my wrist, ready to grab and pull me out of Honey’s reach.

I looked to Bane, about to ask what he saw but I stopped. His eyes were glowing so bright, brighter than they ever have before as he stared at Honey. I don’t know what he was seeing but it made him begin to shake. He shook his head, muttering and mumbling to himself.

“What
